The practice of chiropractic medicine involves a range of diagnostic methods
including skeletal imaging, observational and tactile assessments, and orthopedic and neurological evaluation. A
chiropractor may also refer a patient to an appropriate specialist, or co-manage with another health care provider.
Common patient management involves spinal manipulation and other manual therapies to the joints and soft
tissues, rehabilitative exercises, health promotion, electrical modalities, complementary procedures, and lifestyle
Spinal manipulation, which
chiropractors call "spinal adjustment" or "chiropractic adjustment", is the most common treatment used in
chiropractic care; in the U.S., chiropractors perform over 90% of all manipulative treatments. Spinal
manipulation is a passive manual maneuver during which a three-joint complex is taken past the normal range of
movement, but not so far as to dislocate or damage the joint; its defining factor is a dynamic thrust, which is
a sudden force that causes an audible release and attempts to increase a joint's range of motion. More
generally, spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) describes techniques where the hands are used to manipulate,
massage, mobilize, adjust, stimulate, apply traction to, or otherwise influence the spine and related
Like other health practitioners, chiropractors follow a standard routine to get information
needed to diagnose and treat patients. They take the patient’s medical history; conduct physical, neurological,
and orthopedic examinations; and may order laboratory tests. X rays and other diagnostic images are important
tools because of the chiropractor’s emphasis on the spine and its proper function. Chiropractors also analyze
the patient’s posture and spine using a specialized technique. For patients whose health problems can be traced
to the musculoskeletal system, chiropractors manually adjust the spinal column.
Some chiropractors use other alternative medicines in their practices, including therapies
using water, light, massage, ultrasound, electric, acupuncture, and heat. They also may apply supports such as
straps, tapes, and braces to manually adjust the spine. Chiropractors counsel patients about health concepts
such as nutrition, exercise, changes in lifestyle, and stress management, but chiropractors do not prescribe
drugs or perform surgery.
addition to general chiropractic practice, some chiropractors specialize in sports injuries, neurology,
orthopedics, pediatrics, nutrition, internal disorders, or diagnostic imaging.
